Deepfake Technology: All you need to know

Share this:

The current situation in the world is a bit unstable. There’s Covid19, degrading economies, alarming environmental changes and a lot more. If all of it wasn’t sufficient, let me present to you today a miraculous technology, popularly being referred as ‘Deepfakes’ or ‘Deepfake Technology’.

Deepfakes are artificially created media in which a person in an existing image or video gets replaced by somebody else. While the act of faking content is not new, it’s being used more commercially now and has an inclination towards deceiving others. Photo manipulation started in the 19th century but it soon found it’s place in the motion pictures too. With the betterment of technology in 20th century came digital videos and along with those the manipulation in the ‘stills’ and ‘motion’ got new grounds.

This technology got developed by researchers at academic institutions beginning in the 1990s, and later by amateurs in online communities. More recently the methods have been adopted by different industries. Here’s a quick example of the deepfake technology:

Deepfake example.gif

The above moving image is an example of deepfake technology: in a scene from Man of Steel, actress Amy Adams in the original (left) is modified to have the face of actor Nicolas Cage (right).

Unfortunately, this is not it. There are more examples that you should take a look at:

The real commercial exposure to general public happened in 2017 with actress Scarlett Johansson nude doctored videos got viral. Since it was not a real life footage and had inconsistencies so people could make out the difference. However with the advent of technology, the situation is completely bizarre today.

Algorithms require ample amount of videos to implement the fixes and create the deepfakes making Celebrities and Public Figures more susceptible due to easy availability of their video coverage.

The capabilities are enormous and disturbing to say the least. With the AI technology improving faster than we can think, it is imperative for us to understand its effect on us all.

Presidential elections are due in the United States and one deepfake can impact the fate of an entire nation for the next upcoming years. To say that people don’t get fooled and don’t believe things they see would be completely playing naive despite of the fact how the previous elections were contested.

The technology has a far wide reach in terms of industries since more people prefer videos for informational/entertainment/knowledge purposes. An anonymous programmer launched a free and an easy to use app by the name of DeepNude that had the capability to take an image of a fully clothed woman and remove her clothes to create non-consensual porn content. Fortunately, the team decided to close since it went viral and have huge potential to malign the lives of women especially.

Imagine it to become a common technology that we use daily like Whatsapp, Facebook & Youtube and think the kind of dangerous potential it has.

It’s important that you know there’s this technology which can create a solid bias in what you think, how you think and why you think. Because we are neurally programmed to believe what we see from our eyes.

I’d advice my dear readers to be cautious of bizarre videos and articles you come across online and suggest to check about the existence and source of anything doubtful.

The world is turning to be a darker place. If only you could ignite the light, you may inspire others to follow. Maybe, we still have a chance.
